Attorney Job Questions & Answers

I've heard that attorney jobs at the government level are like this but what are the jobs prospects for these positions? I understand that salary would be lower but a high salary isn't as high up on my list of priorities. A 50-60K position would be ideal for me if it meant that I could have a structured work schedule.

Do you feel that there is an unhealthy increase in the number of people practicing patent law? I am a senior mechanical engineer highly considering law school for the purpose of becoming a patent attorney. However, I do not want to spend three years and 100K+ if there is not a need for patent attorneys.

It's completely obviously that the attorneys at my job have favorites. This is what I am mad about. Every six months, every employee is supposed to have a 6 month review. The purpose of the review is to discuss your job performance. The majority of the time a raise is given at that review. Well, it's been 4 months passed my 6 months and I still haven't gotten a review. But, my attractive co-worker, who the attorney's adore, just had her review today. Also, this same co-worker got a 1 year anniversary party whereas other co-workers that have worked here over a year didn't get a party. I can give more examples of favoritism, but I probably sound bitter. But I am so mad, I am thinking about quitting.

I graduated from Rutgers Law this year. I was a night student, worked as a litigation paralegal for two years at a 225 attorney firm, have good grades, was on the main journal, published an article in the journal. I was a finance major in undergrad and concentrated on business law classes at law school. All I want is a position as a business attorney at a large or mid sized firm. Unfortunatley, every where I apply they tell me that they are impressed with my credentials but they primarily recruit their summer associates for entry level jobs. I already sent out 100 cover letters and resumes! Can anyone give me any tips or share their experiences? Does any one know of any firms that are looking to hire? I took NJ and PA bar exam a few weeks ago. I would be willing to take a job anywhere and would take the bar in that locality. I've been applying to firms in Philly, NJ and NY.

First off, I'm an accountant, but I'm wondering about this because of many friends who are out of work attorneys. For years law schools have been falsifying their employment data to lure undergraduates into believing the law is still a viable profession, when in reality the industry has been over-saturated for many years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in a good economy there are typically 20,000 new attorney jobs added every year, but law schools graduate approximately 44,000 new lawyers each year! Use Google to search for "law school no jobs" or "law school false employment data", every major news organization including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times has done multiple stories on the topic ever since the great recession brought the issue to the forefront of the legal industry. However, the problem was not caused by the great recession; there are no jobs for lawyers and there haven't been for many years, it's all hype, only now people are speaking out about it because the next generation is facing 6 figure debt with no conceivable way to pay it off, incurred in part because of fraud in the inducement to go law school. The nature of the industry-wide collapse is not cyclical, the changes are permanent due in part to a more educated public and more sophisticated technology (search engines, legal software etc...), two things that together have done away with the need for so many lawyers. The ABA has gone as far as publishing a statement basically telling undergraduates that law school is a losing bet and to seriously rethink your decision http://www.abanet.org/lsd/legaled/value.pdf
