It is my understanding that court reporters are trained to enter key strokes on a machine based on the sounds they hear. How does the machine transcribe those key strokes into individual words? How does it differentiate between words such as "there" and "their" or "reed' and "read"? What procedure is followed for a multiple syllable words such as "discombobulating"?

I have a bachelors degree but have been thinking about a career as a court reporter for some time now. It has just been recently that I feel truly unhappy in my current position and want to pursue this. I work full time and not really sure how to get started, if online programs will be sufficient. I have so many questions about this. I hear that court reporters in California can make up to $100,000, but what is the average income of court reporters in Texas, specifically Houston and surrounding areas? What is the starting salary and the average maximum? How much experience is needed to make the maximum? How demanding is this job as far as work hours? And lastly, what schools or classes are needed to become licensed? I've been researching the income and usually end up with mixed results anywhere from $40,000 to $80,000. There is a pretty big gap there. I currently make around $40K/year, but $80K is ideal. I don't know how big of a demand there is for court reporters in Texas, but it seems like something I'd enjoy doing, although living on a nice income is my main concern. Any advice or personal experience is appreciated.

Some states don't have court reporters, take Alaska that hasn't had any for 20 years. So, obviously they lasted with electronic recordings all this time without problems. Now New York and Minnesota are considering it because of budget cuts. Will they bring them back once the crisis is over or not?
