Unemployment levels are rising in the UK and the banking system is facing major difficulties. Do you know what this will mean for lawyers who specialise in employment or banking law? Will their workload increase? What kind of challenges will they face? Also, if you know how this will affect US lawyers I would also like to hear from you.

I am in the Army, and while accompanying me on my assignment in Korea, my wife got hired for a civil service job in the grade of GS-11 using provisions of Family Member Appointment. However, shortly after hiring her, the Air Force withdrew the position, saying my wife did not meet the Time in Grade requirements. Under US Code, time in grade requirements only apply to Career Civil Servants, not to family member appointees, but the Air Force Personnel Center (which is staffed by Career Civil Servants) claimed that it was not fair that Family Members should be exempt and withdrew the appointment. My wife's boss restructured the position as GS-7 so my wife could continue to work, and we submitted a claim. The IG said they were unable to act, and our congressman was voted out of office before our issue concluded. Our JAG office has urged us from the beginning to sue the gov't, but we are in Korea and I have no idea how to find an Employment lawyer who can take our case. Any ideas? The damages we would be seeking is the wage difference from GS-7 to GS-11, which is approximately $15,000 as well as backdating her date of rank to the day she started working as a GS-11, which makes her available for promotion into the Senior Executive Service (the General Officers of the Civil Service) four years earlier. The JAG office, by law, cannot assist us in finding a personal attorney.

At my current job, most of the employees are part-time workers, and they try to schedule us to under 30 hours for the week. A lot of times we are called in for additional hours which sometimes puts us over 40 hours for the week. However, instead of logging in (via company intranet) they have us fill out "mis-punch" forms for the additional hours. They do this to avoid paying us anything additional to our normal pay if we surpass 40 hours for the work week. Is this legal? This is a huge corporation, although Im not sure if the whole company condones this or if just the store I work in does so. If this is illegal, what actions can I take or who, outside of the company, should I speak to? Is there anyway to get any pay from the past weeks that I worked over 40 hours? Thanks, and if your an employment lawyer please let me know when responding.

I don't know of anyone to recommend one. I looked in the local Yellow Pages but which one? Supposedly, I was displaced due to restructuring which is questionable. I was given a suspicious Separation Agreement and General Release of All Claims to sign. In this Agreement it states "do not sign without the advice of a lawyer". I was given a terrible severance package and told not to discuss it with anyone. I was given a cheezy, generic reference letter and was told "no phone calls for references". This is hurting my job search along with the fact that I am 55 years old. I was told my co-worker would be terminated in another week and now found out that she is being given special privileges because she was formally employed with the parent company and will be getting a different severance package because of that. Additionally, I had filed a workplace harassment complaint against 8 employees of the parent company on 12/03/06 and 2 months later find myself terminated. Suspicious?

Average salary please Can you also provide a job description? I would think that a student out of a top tier law school (harvard, yale, etc) would be hired as an associate and would be paid $130,000. I might be attending third tier school. Does that mean will I will have to do the horse work?

The situation revolved around a legal issue that was there before I started. When I discovered it in my first week of employment, I dealt with it appropriately. Without going in to too much detail, an employee used forged documents to clear up the issue. When the forgery was discovered, I notified the CEO immediately. Now I am taking the fall for it.

I've always heard that when stressed on the job and it causes emotional problems you can claim workmans comp... My boss keeps belittling my religious beliefs with his somewhat off color comments and it's somewhat stressfull. It isn't quite harassment but what he does is quite bothersome. It plays a role in my life at home and I tend to be easily aggitated with the little things within the household. So before I seek help with our health plan, I was wondering, could this be a work related injury?

I was told that if I wanted to keep my job working at a Head Start, I needed to do all that I could to prove the charges were alcohol related versus drugs by visiting the OSBI to verify the night in question, 15 years ago. I have no time to spend in court but was curious how one deals with an issue concerning their record. I have another job by the way. I have to search Oklahoma law also which isnt my specialty; HELP!

I have applied for jobs that I know I have more experience and better qualifications than the "younger person" they hired. They can't come out and say it is because of my age but I feel it is, but how can I prove it. They can use any reason they want and it is still "age discrimination". Don't they realize and older person in most cases are more reliable and dependable than the younger generation?
