Legal Assistant Job Questions & Answers

When looking at legal job postings, I see a lot of posts for paralegals. Some of the salaries are more than associate attorneys I know are making. Some are even more than senior lawyers I know make at small law firms, and definitely more than a lot of solo attorney I know. Why is this? Are paralegals becoming more valuable than attorneys to some companies? Do you think this profession will continue to grow and evolve? Will they become more valuable and make more money? Also I am talking "real" paralegal positions here, not legal assistant jobs or legal secretaries.

I just graduated from college and I have my first "real world" job interview on Friday for a legal assistant position. I own a black suit, is this appropriate? If not, I would appreciate some suggestions. Also, what is an appropriate way to wear my hair? It is permed so it tends to look a little less than polished. Any interview tips you could offer would be greatly appreciated!

I'm applying for a legal assistant job, and on the application, under previous experience it lists "prepared and/or processed routine correspondence." I am not exactly sure of what that means. This is not a qualifying skill, just one they'd like to know if I possess. Before I click yes, based on my assumption of what routine correspondence is , I'd like to make certain! That's where you come in...thanks :)

I know some people who do legal assistant work on the side for extra money. They don't have any legal related certification but when I tried to get a similar part time job , they required a certification. How do those many people get that job then?

I will be graduating with my associates' degree in July. I am looking for work away from where I live (Pittsburgh, PA). I went to Toronto last year and fell in love. I understand there is a high cost of living, but I want to see if it would be possible to move there. A few questions: 1) Do Canadian law firms hire entry-level paralegals with American associates' degrees? 2) How hard it is to find a paralegal/legal assistant job in Toronto? 3) How much would I have to earn in order to live? I am single and don't drink or drive. Please provide figures in Canadian and American dollars. 4) Do I need to have my credentials assessed? 5) Would knowledge of American law be advantageous? 6) Would I need to learn the Canadian legal system before I could find work?

I am thinking of switching out of the university of alberta to go into the Legal Assistant program at Grant Mac, and i was wondering if anyone had done this program and has some feedback? Any thoughts? Also, in regards to the answer i have already received, i am not planning on going to law school/ being a lawyer. I am not looking for career advice, i am simply wondering what people think of the specific Grant MacEwan program, and if anyone has experience with that specific program.
