I am an experienced Pattern Maker/Designer for garment industry, worked mostly in the west coat, but I've always wanted to experience life in New York City. How much chance do you think I have - in finding work right now - in this economy in New York City?
2 answers - Asked By: Buttercup - 3/1/2009
This would be the person who takes the fashion designer's drawing and develops/creates the pattern with which the garment will be constructed. So the answer would not be "seamstress, tailor or designer". The word might have a french origin.

I know dressmakers make made-to-measure clothing such as dresses, skirts etc. That they sample patterns, fabrics, embellishments, embroidery, trimmings and prints to clients - but do they MAKE these things I've described. Or do they get suppliers to make them? Is it that Fashion Designers mainly draw designs- choosing colours, fabrics and shape that they want for the dressmaker to make ? Please Help!

I need to find a dressmaker that will copy a dress that I have made myself. Im looking at starting a small online clothing line and I would need a dressmaker that can make multiples of the dresses for me as I am not the best at sewing. I dont have a pattern though - can they copy something I bring in if I show them how I did it?

Americans love their cars, but the supply of oil is limited and will become increasingly expensive. The current patterns of transport and settlement cannot be sustained for more than a few decades. The domestic auto makers Ford, GM and Chrysler are faltering already. Should governments shift infrastructure investments to new modes of transport before the oil runs out?. Note that roads are a public subsidy to the auto industry. (A subsidy to domestic manufactures might be justified, but a subsidy to foreign manufactures is questionable.) Would investment in rail, for example, be a better long term investment of public funds? What will happen to suburban real estate as transport costs escalate? rby9 good points about alternate energy and the relationship of population density to practicality of mass transit. Warren, I considered the idea of a highway with energy beamed to vehicles with microwaves. The electricity could be supplied by wind/solar facilitues beside the highway, and there is sufficient energy for light to moderate traffic. The problem is that the required power density would not be healthy for the car's occupants. I am a PhD physicist with several patents and that problem is one that I would like to solve too. Carl, interesting perspectives about traffic in a large city. I was not aware that cities were spread as a matter of policy to reduce vulnerablity to nuclear attack. Perhaps that is a good policy even after the cold war, but there are associated costs.

A complete dinner service with some items lovingly restored (by hot riveting) in past times has the clearly recognisable Amherst Japan pattern and the chunky feel of ironstone yet has no makers stamp or mark. What does this mean?

When I am a little bit older, I would LOVE to work in the fashion business. Either starting my own clothing line, writing for fashion magazines, assisting photo shoots, or even helping out in fashion shows...anything. How can I get started in that? I am still young, but how can I begin? Should I take fashion classes? Switch my high school and go to one mainly for fashion? Any tips/ideas?

I'm not sure what the material is. It could be linoleum. It's some artificial tile-patterned material that's layed down in a sheet (not actual separate tiles). Anyway, every month I've been scrubbing like crazy with a mop and hot water with a little detergent to get the dirt out of all the little nooks in the floor. It's quite time consuming and exhausting. Is there a better method or any device I could buy to make the job easier?

At day, im tired, sleepy, not hungry. At night, im hungry, energetic, not sleepy, sometimes sick. I feel like excercising at night too because i cant seem to sleep. My mind is also wondering around and extremely active. If i had a notebook, i could fill it up by the end of a week. Thats how its like for me at night.i usually sleep late, or go to sleep feeling like p****g. Im skinny, the bed sucks, my sleeping stuff sucks. I cant fall asleep for over 2-3 hours. Its been like that since june. I dont want to have a night life, or start night hobbies anytime soon, so how do i get better? I had this method that got me to sleep in 30 minutes, and it involved moving my feet around, shaking it, probing that part of the bed. I dont know y it worked but it did. But now, i cant seem to remember the pattern in which i moved my feet around, and i move my feet around at day time a lot now. So that method doesnt work anymore...I think its because my room and bed changed...

If you think about where the big money makers are and where the cost of living is out of control, its these big cities like San Francisco, San Diego, LA, Chicago, and New York. Why is it that these cities that have the worst crime rates and gangs, the most drug dealers and the jobs that make the most money in America and are a majority Liberals? Don't you find this odd? They can't even control their cities yet think they know best how to run the country? Hollywood people don't set good examples, most of them can barely stay married for a few years.
