I am livid....Months ago I needed an external modem to make my dialup work and bought it at Staples and had to return it because it didn’t work on vista. I went to Walmart for Christmas and bought an HP laptop because it was less expensive than at Staples. I took it back because the connection hole was not for dialup so I had to return it. Today I went to Walmart and bought a Gateway laptop had a talk with the salesman who said “see, this hole is for your dialup connection”. He was wrong, there was no hole for dialup connection. So I had to go to Staples, showed the tech the Gateway laptop (took it out of the box and he looked at it) and he said I needed an external modem for this laptop. I said I needed a tech to make sure it would work right this time and he (a tech) assured me it would but lifted no finger to make it work. I got them home, plugged in the cd for the external modem and find that the external modem is not only is NOT for Windows 8 but that it isn’t for this laptop either because the laptop says it uses only broadband (cable, dsl or satellite). I have dialup. I like dialup, I want dialup. Techs want jobs but they are so darned lazy. I want to know when one is going to lift a finger to help and put one item with another item and make them work. And no manufacturer gives their support number anymore…grrr. Tomorrow I have to go to two places now to return this junk so I'm livid. christine, don't waste my time if you have no answer. 2?f the public in the USA still use dialup and it's because some areas can't get dsl and such and other use it because of hurricanes/tornadoes. You're so wrong. And, guess what, in my area I could get my pager to work...duh. Well yeah, I have a large expenditure right now for my business and would be willing to pay for some tech who wants to work, but none do. Well geez christine you did read part of my complaint, I said i know about the externam modem but the tech won't install the d**n thing and if he did he would find the one he gave me is the wrong one. Sure the modem's box has directions but it doesn't work on THIS computer. You said make sure I'm buying a computer with the right requirements, well that's what I just said to you, the tech at Walmart said it was the right kind. But now you don't listen you said CALL the manufacture and I just said there is no 800 number. Well t so there is no 800 contact number...and the techs are just lazy and don't want to work. Chip you can be as offended as you want, we in our area need dialup...and it's the best for disasters because it's on the phone lines which usually work during disasters...so put that in your pipe and smoke it...and some rural people use dial up too. And seniors have downsized to dialup because it's inexpensive and we don't play games and such where we need a lot of power. Thank you for saying though that "Windows * especially can NOT run on dial-up" well why didn't the techs say that, I Informed them I had dialup. They physically saw the laptop, held it in their hands then gave me the wrong thing. No, the techs did NOT suggest I switch fo broadband. I want dialup for security sake. No, I did NOT refuse to act on a professional recommendation, you just aren't informed. The techs were just d**n lazy and were not up on what they're selling. Though not as common as it once was over a decade ago, dialup Internet access does still exist and is a low-cost option for those who are looking for an inexpensive plan and only do not necessarily view multimedia content. http://electronics.costhelper.com/internet-access.html dialup costs $10-$12.50 per month DSL $35 per month (high speed add $20-$25 per month) cable broadband $25 per month plus installation (could get bundled) in 2011 AOL alone added 200,000 dial-up customers in 2010 6?ere dial up customers = dial-up subscriptions had declined to fewer than 30 million in 2008 10?ere dial up customers AT&T offers basic DSL ("Direct Express") without a phone line for $24.95/month http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_accesshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dial-up_Internet_access
