I'm a university student working a full time job this summer in Toronto. I'm looking to develop my (fairly basic) carpentry skills over the summer. What would be the best way to approach this? Are there (once or twice a week) amateur carpentry courses offered anywhere? Could I take a course at a legitimate carpentry school? I assume I would be way over my head if I did the latter. Suggestions?

My boss hired me via craigslist to be like a carpenter's helper. This guy ask me if I know how to cut, measure and the basics and I said yes. But he never gave me a change to prove myself. He hired this white guy a weeks later and ask him if he knew how to measure and cut and before I knew it this white guy was doing all the cutting and and skill work , while he had me unloading wood and fetching things and picking up trash. You see, we were both getting paid the same wage and I believe I had more skills. This "white guy" who I will call Jim usually will come up to me for advice after the boss gives him an assignment. I would basically guide this guy through what he had to do and I was never acknowledge because the boss was never around when it was happening.I got fed up today and quit. Funny thing is after I quit Jim quit the same day. Also my boss initially did not know I was black until I came to the job since their was no interview. I call and he told me to come to work. In conclusion , I just wish I was giving a chance to prove myself. He ask me numerous times if I knew how to do carpentry work and I said yes every time times. Jim will tell you himself that he's not that great when it come to carpentry. I just don't know.

This is a question for people who have "hands-on" type jobs. This would be something like: carpenter, electrician, someone who cuts hair, that guy who makes networking cables and hooks up peoples computers, etc. Your job consists of you doing something physical most of the day. I am just wondering, what your job is, what kind of training you had, what it pays, and what you like and don't like about it. And for those who don't actually have a hands on job, if you were to get one, what do you think you would want to do? Thanks!

I used to work for my father at a job site when he had houses being built and with my co worker did everything that you could think of that requires you to clean. Take out the trash and dump it in the dumpster, lift heavy objects such as wood and plaster, shovel concrete torn out and carried in big buckets all the way to the dumpster, vaccumed, sweeped floors, clean the trash as well as compact trash that is too full in the dumpster. the reason why i'm asking this is that i'm applying for a job and want to know what is the best description I can use to put on my resume because since applying to my new job that has been the only one that I've had for awhile. I was wondering if anyone could help me with making this sound better then just construction clean up crew.
