I quit my plumbing job, that was paid by commission, and my employer said he is holding my last check for 2 weeks. Can he do that? Can my employer make a contract that says he can hold my check for 2 weeks, if I quit? I signed a paper when I started, but I didnt think someone can over-ride a state law, even if I did sign a contract.

A relative had asked my husband to do a small plumbing job for them which he did. In two hours, he replaced the bathroom faucet, drain, two supply lines and 2 shut off valves. The relative paid for all the materials however what should my husband ask for in payment in terms of labor and time? What would the average charge be in Northern California? My husband is not a professional plumber but a weekend handyman.

I'm interested to know what the most profitable plumbing jobs are? Obviously, large scale commmercial jobs would be excellent if bid appropriately, but I'm wondering about the day-to-day medium sized jobs. Where do plumbing companies make the best money? On what types of jobs?

Please consider factors such as distance of relocation and the benefits/responsibilities of the job. For example, if you were in retail would you move 200 miles for a plumbing job that pays half as much, but only after 6 months of unemployment? What if you owned a home and had to sell it or rent it out and move your family? Lots of factors and possibilities, please discuss. Thanks!

And how many different types of plumbing jobs are there? Do you have to be really smart to be a plumber? How long does it take to become a plumber? For plumbing jobs, is it cheaper to get roto-rooter and other national chain plumbers in the phone book? Or is it cheaper to get a no name plumber? I got a no name plumber to install a new shower/bath faucet. It cost $460. The shower/bath faucet costs $100, so I guess the rest is for labor. Is that too expensive?
