Otr Drivers Job Questions & Answers

Sort by:
My husband just got his CDL Class A license. He does not want to be an OTR driver. We have small children. He has been out of training for 3 weeks and needs to drive immediately. He has applied to several companies but they want experience, where is he supposed to get experience if no one hires him. Also are there any companies that he can work for that will allow him time home every night?

I would just like to try it out to see if it is something I might want to get into. I have been a city slicker all my life. What I am looking for is a job that would keep me busy all summer and be self sufficient. I am 29 years old, in good shape. I have been an OTR truck driver, but my most recent job was retail.

I heard that while gaining experience with OTR, new drivers are often required to team drive with a more experienced driver. I'm all for learning and team playing and what not, but two weeks in the cab with a complete stranger seems a little cramped. Note: I thought I should clarify, I'm talking about coming in with a license from a school, not taking the company training program.

What do you think about this? Will moving to one final truck driving job make a difference in whether or not I can get hired as a software developer?

And no criminal history to get a job as an OTR driver? I do not generally do well in job interviews. My communications skills are not the best. I was working as a technician for a fortune 500 company for several years. Have been unemployed for the past year. I have not yet attempted to find a truck driving job. I have heard that there is a shortage of drivers, but I suspect there are plenty of unemployed people who would be willing to give truck driving a try. If you have any knowledge of this industry, would appreciate your comments.

I am interested in getting into truck driving. I was wondering if anyone knows of any companies, in the Dallas, Fort Worth area, that you will train you and place you with a company that does regional instead of OTR trucking for the contract period? I have a family and don't want to be gone for long, long periods of time. I would like to be home weekends. Can't afford truck driving school though but OTR really isn't a big option for me. Let me know if anyone out there has any suggestions!

My husband is a state roads crew truck driver. He is away from home 5 days a week, 6 months a year. He pays his living expenses out of pocket and is not reimbursed by the company. This is his first year on the job and we were told that he can claim Per Diem for his expenses on taxes. How do I do that? I know where to find how much to claim based on the city or county he was in but where in my taxes do I claim that?? Any help would be great!

It's already documented how he schemed to give a $35 billion contract to foreigners and how he's a liar claiming Americans won't do jobs illegals do, but I figure that's doesn't give McCain enough credit for how he wants to continue the Republican raping of America.

America's trucking industry is about to be undercut by Mexican drivers that accept wages less than 40?f what American drivers are getting. This open border is going to contribute to a higher accident rate, increased insurance rates, and will cause American shipping companies to fold because they can not compete with Mexican prices. American truckers are about to be replaced with inexperienced drivers, drivers who do not know or respect DOT laws, and unsafe vehicles that have not and will not have to pass American inspections. My husband has been an OTR semi driver for close to 20 years now and he is not sure what his next job will be when American shipping firms hire Mexicans in order to compete in the market. Why should Mexicans be allowed to hurt our economy in such a manner?
